6 Ways to Improve Your Student’s Attention Span

When it comes to learning, teachers, tutors and parents should know about the power of concentration. Being able to stay focused is the key to successfully learning a new subject or topic. But a lot of people in today’s age struggle with keeping their attention span focused. For teachers and students alike, here are different ways of keeping the student’s attention engaged.

1. Play Memory Games and Activities.

Thanks to the internet, there are a vast number of learning games and activities to choose from. Many of these games are designed specifically to capture a student’s attention. Some students can do with a simple set of flash cards to memorize from, while other students need elaborate activities that incite excitement. Have your student play games that they find fun and interesting to learn from.

2. Remove Distractions.

In today’s age of technology, one giant hurdle that educators must deal with is distraction. A student’s attention span can easily be taken by a vibrating smart phone or the opened tabs of an internet browser. Confiscate the smart phones. Have your student work on a clear, de-cluttered desk. Don’t give them a chance to become distracted.

3. Break it into Tasks.

If your student is working on a particularly long project or assignment, then it’s a good idea to break the project up into smaller tasks. This will ensure that the student can focus on one thing at a time. You don’t want them feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by the work.

4. Time Each Task.

Keep track of the time when working on large projects or assignments. If your student becomes stuck on a problem and stays on it for too long, it’s okay for them to move on and save the problem for later. You could even create a schedule so that the student has a guide on how long they should work on each task.

5. Take Breaks.

When your brain studies for long periods of time, it can become tired and lose its stamina for concentration. Give your student the occasional break so that they can feel re-energized. Snacks or a physical activity tend to work well.

6. Try Different Learning Styles. According to various educational organizations, most students can be categorized as having one of three types of learning methods: visual, auditory or kinesthetic. Students have their own ways of learning and it’s up to the teachers to figure out what works best for each individual.
